(e) We sometimes fear particular individuals, even when—from an objective viewpoint—there is no reason to feel this way. Hidden Level examines the need for physical protection from violence and serves as a reminder of the contradiction that exists between rational observation and how such a situation is perceived in retrospect. The project was carried out in Geneva, that is, in the context of a western society. The project began with video recordings of uniformed individuals, with individuals who have among other tasks in our society that of protection from violence (the project was carried out with real police, military and Securitas personnel). I filmed the participants during several minutes. During this time they were asked to look directly into the camera and to think about a situation in which they had felt protected. In a second stage I recorded a short anecdote by each person. They described a situation in which they had been afraid of another person. The filmed sequences and the recorded sound were layered on top of each other during the editing of the video.

(g) Gegenüber von bestimmten Personen empfinden wir ein Gefühl der Angst, obwohl es nüchtern betrachtet keinen Grund für dieses Gefühl gibt. Hidden Level untersucht das Bedürfnis nach physischem Schutz vor Gewalt und ruft die Widersprüchlichkeit zwischen dem rationalem Betrachten und dem Wahrnehmen einer solchen Situation in Erinnerung. Das Projekt ist in Genf, also im Kontext einer westlichen Gesellschaft durchgeführt worden. Das Projekt begann mit Videoaufnahmen mit uniformierten Personen, mit Personen, die sich in unserer Gesellschaft, unter anderem um den Schutz vor Gewalt kümmern (Projekt ist mit echtem Polizeipersonal, Militär und Securitas realisiert worden). Während einigen Minuten filmte ich die Teilnehmer, die dabei direkt in die Kamera schauten und an eine Situation dachten, in denen sie sich beschützt fühlten. In einem zweiten Durchlauf nahm ich von jeder Person eine kurze Anekdote auf. Sie schilderten eine Situation, in der sie Angst vor einer anderen Person hatten. Die gefilmten Sequenzen und der aufgenommen Ton wurden bei der Montage des Videos übereinander gelegt.

(f) Face à differentes personnes, il arrive que l’on ait une sensation de peur même si cette réaction n’a pas lieu d’être. Sur la base de cette observation, j’ai réalisé un travail vidéo autour de l’irrationalité de nos réactions relativement à la protection physique et émotionnelle et aux circonstances sociales actuelles. A la base de la réalisation, je filme des personnes en uniforme, militaires, agents de police et de sécurité. Pendant un instant je filme ces personnes qui doivent regarder directement la camera. Je leur demande de repenser à un moment de leur vie durant lequel ils se sentaient protégés et à l’abri. Dans un deuxième temps j’enregistre une courte anecdote qui raconte la peur qu’ils ont eue face à une autre personne. Les séquences filmées et le son enregistré sont montés ensemble.
